each other. It is this honor and religious integrity that cause many historians to refer to the Mayflower compact as the foundation for all following governing documents in United States history. Another crucial governing document in United States history is the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation (1777) was the first constitution of the United States and legally established the Union of states. The Articles of Confederation were created by the Second Continental Congress to have a plan of confederacy for securing the freedom and independence of the United States. The Articles of Confederation gave congress the power to; raise an army, establish diplomatic treaties, declare war, and handle Indian affairs. The Articles of Confederation were opposed by the Federalists and Alexander Hamilton, who felt that the Articles were insufficient at establishing an effective government. The Federalists saw the weaknesses of the Articles; such as its inability to levy taxes, approval by unanimous consent, and inability to control an expanding nation, as “flaws” in the government of the United States.
