The Equal Pay Act, which was signed into law by President Kennedy in 1963, was one of the first laws to address gender discrimination. Even decades after the act was signed into law, there is still a pay gap and gender discrimination. The reasoning for gender wage gaps are multi- faceted. Research shows that, irrespective of the level of qualification, jobs predominantly done by women pay less on average than jobs predominantly done by men. By reducing the gender wage gap and paying everyone equally would cut poverty amongst working women and their families by more than half and add approximately $513 billion to the national economy. If the pace of progress towards pay equity continues at its slow pace, it will take until 2059 before women will reach pay equality. Racial discrimination has also has a huge factor on gender wage gap. A Hispanic woman will have to wait until 2248 to reach pay equality with white men while a black woman will have to wait until 2124 for equal pay (Institute for Women’s Policy Research 2016) Modern-day solutions have been somewhat effective in alleviating the problem.
