PC Mac Now the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer window fills your whole screen. You can also change the size of your ArcGIS Online window by stretching it. Stretching the window instead of maximizing it allows you to organize other windows and dialog boxes as they appear. 6. Place the cursor on any corner of the ArcGIS Online window that is not at the edge of your screen. The cursor changes to a diagonal double-headed arrow. Click and drag the window outward until the ArcGIS Online window fills about two-thirds of the screen. Let go of the mouse button. Take a minute to label the states. 7. Click on the Show Contents of Map button. OR 8. Hover over the States layer and click on the ellipses (three dots). 9. Click on Create Labels . The state names cover up some of the small states. Let’s use abbreviations instead of full names.

10. Highlight the existing Text {STATE_NAME} and backspace to delete it. 11. Click the plus sign to the right of Text. 12. Scroll down and click on Abreviation {STATE_ABBR}. 13. Make sure the Size is 10 . 14. Click OK. Now the states are labeled with their abbreviations. In order to see the full name of a state when you want to, or if a state is too small to display the label, you will click on a state to see a popup window with information. When you zoom in to make the states larger, the labels appear for those states that couldn’t display.

A check mark means the layer is turned on. No check mark means it is turned off. Q1: Look at the sizes of the states. What pattern do you see when you move from east to west? Task 3: Settlements started along the East Coast The first European settlements developed along the East Coast. The British established their first settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Settlers established more towns in Plymouth and Boston, Massachusetts, and elsewhere between 1620 and 1630. You will show cities on the map. Even though the cities you add are modern cities, they still reflect the settlement patterns that began with the early European settlements. 15. Turn on the Cities layer by placing a check mark next to the layer name. 16. Hover over the Cities layer and click on the Change Style button. 17. Click on the Location (Single Symbol) Options button.

18. Click on Symbols 19. Choose the green circle and change the Symbol Size to 10 . 20. Click OK. 21. Click OK again. 22. Click Done. Now all the cities appear as green dots.
