behavioral health agency I work with is part of a coalition to raise awareness and funds to meet the needs of those who are experiencing homelessness in my community. As an intensive case manager, there have been times where I have advocated for a client to get a bed in the only women’s homeless shelter in the area by persuading and was not able to do anything because there was simply no availability. This is a persistent issue that many of those in poverty in my community face. To address this issue the Okefenokee Alliance for the Homeless (OATH) was created. This organization is in the process of raising funds to build and women’s and men’s shelter as the group of agencies that combined recognized this issue and offered their specialized knowledge to come up with a solution. This type of mezzo level advocacy would be more like causeadvocacy, “advocacy that benefits groups of people” (KIrst-Ashman & Hull, 2018, p. 547).The potential risk associated with case advocacy is limiting a client’s right to self-determination and progress towards independence.
