RiskThe company spent large amount of money on the six sigma training to senior executive and salaried employees; however, there’s risks if the training program is not consistent, structured and organized. Besides that Six Sigma is applied to all aspects of production and planning process as well as other operation activities in company. UNIT IV – CASE STUDY – SIX SIGMA AT 3M, INCdisagree with the six sigma approach for their department specific or for the company as a whole. The implementation of six sigma at 3M took longer than expectation. After four years of implementation many employees has been trained and many project has been completed for six Sigma but it’s only reached to mid of the transformation while the productivity and revenue grown is still not really sure on the improvement. Another risk of six sigma implementation in 3M is it may block innovation, creative and development of new product. There are some claims that during the time of McNerney, companyis not invest to the innovation and development new product because they were emphasized by six sigmaFunctional areas in the organization and Six Sigma initiative at 3M.As per exhibit 2 as below which show the simple approach to Six Sigma at 3M, all functions areas in 3M were involved to Six Sigma initiative. Human resource function can help find the right people for primary roles of six sigma especially Black Belt roles and ensure they remain in those positions. HR help to identify candidates with the right mix of technical, team, and leadership skills and abilities. Furthermore,HR also can help to develop the right competency of six sigma personnel. They also help in playan important role in six sigma initiative is developing a retention strategy to keep black belts and other key person.
UNIT IV – CASE STUDY – SIX SIGMA AT 3M, INCFinance function will track and follow up on the savings from each projects. Its function also to plan for the cost of implementation and support to operation of other department in six sigma initiative. Operation function was required to have deep involvement and participant in six sigma implementation. Operation functionneed to improve in production processto ensure that all processes are lean toimprove productivity and effectiveness.Applying six sigma will help operationto have the better in inventory management, capacity management this will lead 3M reduce the cycle time in production and improve lead time delivery. Together with Human resource, finance and operation function, six sigma initiative at 3Mwere engaged all other department in the organization they are include sale marketing, customerservice, R&D and administration function with the expectation is improvements in both customer satisfaction and cost savings.
