John B. Watson: The President of the American Psychological Association, pushed for behaviorists influenced by Pavlov, and tested Classical Conditioning on humans. Edward Thorndike: Started the conversations about positive and negative conditioning. B.F. Skinner: Famous for rats and pigeons. As well as Operant Conditioning. Operant Conditioning is what he used to describe the behavior of how animals learn. behaviors that are reinforced will become more likely to occur, and behaviors that are not reinforced will become less likely to occur. Sigmund Freud: Worked with many housewives and studied the unconscious mind he thought dreams were a “window”, in particular sex related drives, pencil=penis, oven=kids, imagery in the unconscious. One of the most famous psychologist but all of his studies were not based off of facts. Humanists: Everyone isn’t driven by sex, but desire to “better” themselves. The reason they don’t achieve is because of society and societal pressures. Freud diagnosed people’s problems, humanists worked for improvement instead of fixing what’s wrong. The basic idea of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is to be self-actualized. (Maslow & Rogers) Current Psychological Perspectives: Biological: How do cells operate, what are they sending, genes on behavior, how do they influence who we become? Evolutionary: 1990s David Bass. See a weird behavior, why? Mate retention, short and long term dating. Cognitive Psychology: Memory, Thinking, Intelligence, Problem Solving. Social Psychology: how we behave in groups and around others. Loneliness, spotlight effort. Developmental Psychology: Children, how do we develop? What changes mentally as we grow older? When are children able to understand? Pseudoscience: describe a claim, belief, or practice presented as scientific, but which does not adhere to the scientific method. The Scientific Method: Is a system we use to define our operations and make them objective through procedures and guidelines. (1,2,3,4,5) (1) Literature.
