What was the main issue relating to Reconstruction that divided Republicans at the end of the Civil War? If you had been a member of Congress at the time, what type of plan for Reconstruction would you have supported and why? The main issue that had divided Republicans at the end of the Civil War was to keep the South from coming back to the way it was before the Civil War and those who would like to keep the South from coming back to its old ways were known as The Radical Republicans. The Radical Republicans wanted the Southern States to be punished and they also wanted African Americans to have rights like to vote. If I was a member of Congress at the time, I would have supported the Radical Republicans. I believe that former slaves should have rights and that former confederate leaders were not in office because if they had power everything might go back to how it was. I don’t believe that the South had to be punished so harshly. So I mostly agree with the Radical Republicans but there are some parts where I don’t.
