Men generally have a higher level of sexual motivation than do women. o Regulatory Drives Sleep 3 independent states of the brain Awake Brain REM sleep: active brain, paralyzed body Non-REM sleep- active brain, moveable body o Brain Waves and Wakefulness Alpha Waves- relaxed brain, drowsy, nonattentive o Stages of Sleep Sleep Stage 1- Brief transition stage when first falling asleep Stages 2 through 4- successively deeper stages of sleep that are characterized by an increasing percentage of irregular, high-amplitude Delta Waves. nREM stage of sleep is divided into 4 stages based on the size and speed of the brain waves generated by the sleeper.

Stage 4 has the biggest and slowest brain waves- Delta Waves. Takes the most stimulation to awaken someone Upon reaching stage 4, and after about 80-100 minutes of total sleep time, sleep lightens and returns through stages 3 and 2. REM sleep emerges. Muscles are relaxed and paralyzed, dreams occur.
