- In men symptoms include pain during urination. Discharge, testicular pain. - In women they include vaginal discharge and bleeding during menstrual periods. - Women can contract PID, and men can get inflammation of the epididymis and it can further spread to the joints and heart valves. - Gonorrhea is treatable with antibiotics. However, there are few that are still successful. The primary treatment is ceftriaxone. (injection). Syphilis - Also known as the “great pox” or “French disease” is one of the oldest STI’s - Can be transmitted through oral, anal or vaginal sex. - Four stages of syphilis: primary, secondary, latency, tertiary. - During primary syphilis the classic symptom is either a single or multiple chancres. - Chancres are painless lumps that appear 21 days after exposure (can be between 3 and 90 days) - Secondary symptoms may include a rash on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet. Other symptoms include sore throat, hair loss and headaches. - In the latency stage many of these symptoms disappear and the infected person is less infections. - The final stage of syphilis is known as the tertiary infection which can occur from 3 to 15 years. Symptoms include neurological symptoms, heart ailments, non-cancerous growths. - Syphilis can be screened. Through blood tests. The treatment is an injection of benzathine penicillin G. - 75,000 case diagnosed in the US Viral Infections - THE human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common STI in Canada and globally. - It is estimated that approximately 70% of people will become infected with HPV at some point in their life. - In most forms it cures itself. In high-risk HPV strains it can cause certain cancers in mouth, cervix, vagina, anus and penis. - Low risk HPV can cause genital warts. It is spread through vaginal, oral and anal intercourse as well as skin to skin contact. - Over 160+ strains of HPV - HPV 16 and HPV 18 cause nearly all cases of cervical cancer and is the common cause of cancer deaths in women. - Regular PAP screening are recommended for early diagnosis. - HPV can also be prevented through HPV vaccines. The vaccines specifically target the most common cancer-causing strains. Vaccines work best before you first sexual debut. - They also protect against HPV 6 and HPV 11 which are responsible for most genital warts. - Warts can be treated with nitrogen cryosurgery.

- Despite the known effectiveness of the HPV vaccine there has been some debate about whether to administrate it to youth . Gardasil. Genital Herpes - Is part of the herpes simplex virus (HSU). - Most people who have herpes will never suffer an outbreak. - Genital herpes appears for about 2-4 weeks and the dissipate on their own. - Cannot be cured but the frequency and severity of outbreaks can be decreased and managed. - The exact number of people infected is unknown because it is not a reportable infection. - Is transmitted through shedding of skin before and after a visible outbreak. Hepatitis B - Multiple types of hepatitis - HEP A and E are usually transmitted via oral-fecal contamination and HEP C is usually transmitted through blood contact.
