3.3.1 Individual Approaches How do you manage your stress? Effective individual strategies include time- management techniques, increasing physical exercise, relaxation training, and expanding the social support network. For example, research has shown that taking a break from work can reduce stress significantly and may improve job performance. These stress management approaches may work differently for different people. Think about what approaches would work best for you. Do you currently practise any stress management tactics? 3.3.2 Organisational Approaches Your organisation can also help you manage your stress. If you are a manager, what will you do to help employees manage their stress levels? Managers may help manage stress by selecting and placing people who are a good fit for their jobs, training employees, set appropriate goals, redesigning jobs, increasing employee involvement, increasing organisational communication, offering sabbaticals or leave problems, and establishing wellness programmes. For example, by setting appropriate goals (Study Unit 3, Section 1.3.1: goal- setting theory), employees are able to perform better as they see the purpose

By carefully managing stress, organisations can reduce the negative consequences of stress. Think about whether your organisation has policies in place to help employees manage their stress. Do you think these policies are effective? What can the organisation do to help employees manage their stress levels? You should now read Robbins and Judge (2015), Chapter 18, pp. 589-593 to learn more stress management techniques. As you read these pages, take note of how different stress management approaches can influence employee satisfaction and performance.
