when completing homework, does not interact or play with friends during breaks in school, she forgets easily, she is easily and effortlessly distracted, she does pay attention but the challenge is that she only pays attention to thing that are of utmost interest to her desires. She plays solo during breaks, has difficulty caring out task that her peers perform such as arithmetic, spelling, reading that requires mental effort and clear thinking capability. Guidelines for ADHD shows that symptoms must be present before the age of 12 years old and must occur in two different settings ( Epstein & Loren, 2013). Katie was initially referred for inattention problems in school, the child exhibits poor impulse control, interrupts the parents when they are speaking at the clinic, thus meeting the diagnostic guideline stipulated in the diagnosis. Other diagnosis considered included anxiety disorder, conduct disorder and mood disorder but they do not meet the symptoms that katie presents.The selection of ADHD on the decision tree needs to be confirmed by using an appropriate assessment tool to formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis. Katie teacher had submitted the conner’s teachers rating scale, which is a tool used in assessment of ADHD in children ages 6-18 years. The tool is effective in screening emotional, behavior that are common in attention deficit disorders ( MHS,2018). The use of Conner’s teacher rating scale as well as current assessment of Katie’s symptoms makes the diagnosis of ADHD very apparent, thus the initiation of the treatment plan and the medication intervention of Adderall XR at 10 mg daily is initiated with the target goal of ADHD symptom alleviation.Decision 2: Psychotherapy Treatment planAdderall is one the medications that are used in treatment of ADHD ( Stahl.2014). Adderall when used as first line stimulant medication to treat ADHD will increase therapeutic efficacy
A YOUNG GIRL WITH DIFFICULTIES AT HER SCHOOL4thereby increasing katie attentiveness thereby increasing her academic performance. The mechanism of action of dopamine is that it releases neurotransmitters dopamine and also it releases norepinephrine in the brain to help reduce the symptoms of ADHD. The use of medication will help reduce the Conner’s scale to minimum. The other medications used for treatment of ADHD include non- stimulant Strattera and Wellbutrin.
