When new CEO decided to implement six sigma for 3M, all managers and employees at many levels of the organization would be asked to engage in new behaviors. HR professionals helped reduce the uncertainty and anxiety surrounding Six Sigma and increase the levels of acceptance and cooperation in the organization. Six Sigma and the innovative culture at 3MThere were some arguments that six sigma suffered the innovation and development of products at 3M during the time of McNerney. This is showing that, beside the advantages of six sigma, 3M also faced many disadvantages and disagreement within the organization. Because, creative and innovation are not a process, when applied six sigma which the focus on process improvement generated the limitation of innovation and creation. However, at 3M, six sigma did not generate much break through ideas but it helped bring new product to market faster and reduce the risk in design process. Therefore, six sigma in R&D department was reduced in the following years after McNerney leave. These changes was probably a reflection that six sigma was not working in R&D. Company should have the strategy to balance between innovation and improvement to ensure operation be improved time to time while the innovation still maintain end develop. Some ideas also mentioned that in operation company should separate the research (R) to development (D) so that six sigma can run successfully but it will not impact to the creation and innovation. However, in overall the answer to this question six sigma can co-exist ofinnovation and improvement is still in argument.
UNIT IV – CASE STUDY – SIX SIGMA AT 3M, INCSix Sigma enough with respect to the future?The improvement of the processes and operation in 3M on cost saving, increment of sale and customer satisfaction will be promoted by many other things rather than six sigma only which is not enough for respect future. In the future, with the development of technology and process transformation together with the change of business environments quickly the currently quality control system will not work anymore. It’s required to have new approach and new development to adapt the future grown. 3M were well aware of this change and they started to process to next steps in the quality control is integration of lean in operation it’s called Lean Six Sigma. Functions and team within the organization’s also encouraged to study and select the right approach for the right project at the right time to ensure the improvement and innovation at 3M is maximized the effectiveness.
