The legislature is bicameral. There is a Senate and a House of Representatives. Each constituency receives the same number of senators and a proportionate amount of representatives to the population of the constituency. What role does referenda play in the state? Referenda are extremely important in Nigeria. The state portrays referenda as the way to listen to its people and gather their opinions. Referenda also serve to show the diverging opinions between each ethnic and religious group. How are the elections competitive (or non-competitive)? Be specific. The elections are extremely competitive. The executive position holds majority of the power, hence the competition is very strong. The election competition used to spread to election fraud and bluffing of the census. The competition divides sharply between the ethnic groups. What are the major political parties? What are their platforms and who do they generally draw votes from? ANPP: ANPP is in opposition to PDP, and draws support from the Muslim population. PDP: PDP is in opposition to ANPP, and draw support from the Christian population. What are the major interest groups and what role do they play in the state? The major interest groups are the professional associations such as the bar association, and the trade union. These interest groups pressure the political parties to establish means such as professional incentives and trades benefits. What role does the military play in the state? The military is an essential part of Nigeria. The military is the essential physical power of the state. For military rules in the history of Nigeria depicts the immense power of military in the state and its role of force and control in Nigeria. What is the role of the judiciary and what powers does it hold? The judicial branch holds the power to declare a law, an act, or a bill unconstitutional. However, since the president appoints the judges, it is more likely to be affected by the majority party. What are the major areas of cleavage in the state (ethnic, racial, class, gender, religious, regional)?

The major cleavages exist in ethnicity and religion. Each ethnic group carries different religions and culture, and even live in different part of the state. Hence, the ethnicity factor plays the major role in cleavage.
