in the very mosques that Christian overtook. But even Christians recognized the beauty of Islamic architecture and asked Muslims to build new palaces for Christians. Since Muslims could no longer build their own palaces, they incorporated their architecture into the buildings they built for Christians. This was an underlying way of keeping their religion alive because “the carved and coffered ceilings, spectacular tile work, and graceful arches [spoke] far more of a Muslim past than of the glory of a Christian ruler” (page 23). They also placed things within the palaces that stated that there was no conqueror but God, and another phrase “Eternal happiness for Allah.” Architecture was the only way that Muslims could still express their faith and culture. It reminds me of the sneaky way that the nuns in “Nails in the Wall” taught the girls Catholicism instead of Protestantism. The Muslims put underlying messages within the “Christian” palaces that exemplified their faith. How were women viewed in this society?
