During the industrial revolution of America, people turned to religion in order to save themselves. People could not control these changes and it was freaking them out. One of the things that people could control was their religion and their salvation. Because people were worried with all of the vices that came from the city that they could not stop. Industrialization freaked a whole bunch of people out so they turned to religion and some people went crazy with it and became religious extremists and preached to many people. Rochester is where Matthias meets the head of the Mormons (Joseph Smith) Mount Zion is what they called their headquarters of where they were living; the location of where he eventually wanted to build his castle church. Isabelle Van Waganon is in the end Sojourner Truth; she is an abolitionist. She is Matthias’ maid.

The idea is that blacks were fighting very courageously in a war in a country that did not help them at all. Women pushed men into war – patriotism Although many men from Augusta were supporters of the union they wanted to show their patriotism.
