The vision of the School of Education is to equip a generation of influential educators focused on God’s calling, devoting their strengths, gifts, and scholarship, to meet the needs of diverse students and to advance the Kingdom of God.” COURSE CONTENT Believing in the importance of developing wise and discerning teachers, we will prayerfully support each candidate as they uncover their strengths, address their weaknesses, develop discernment, and embrace the distinctive characteristics of being a Christian educator. Developing Effective and Impactful Teachers Through Clinical Practice The Biola School of Education endeavors to practice an innovative teacher preparation process that combines educational theory with classroom based practice as the basis for equipping teaching candidates who are active and effective classroom contributors. The Teacher Preparation Program at Biola University utilizes the clinical practice approach in an effort to prepare teachers in the most authentic environment possible. During the clinical practice model, the university professor meets with the class on an actual public (9 weeks) and private (8 weeks) school campus. The venue allows the students to discuss the elements of a successful classroom at the same time in which school is in session. Students are then partnered up with Cooperating Teachers to complete 25 hours of Fieldwork in a subject area classroom. As the course work and clinical preparation model are woven together throughout the program, students are able to emphasize translation of knowledge into practice in a much more fluid and authentic context than if they were sitting in a traditional college classroom. Pre-service program components that serve as predictors of future effective teachers: Quality of mentor during fieldwork & student teaching experience. Number of content specific pedagogy courses/experiences (no one lesson plan offers an all-encompassing comprehensive approach). Focus on learning specific practice and applying those skills in classroom setting during training (applied skills). Involvement with local school district curriculum and learning materials. Demonstration and evaluation of authentic classroom practices. 2
