intensely (matters). The content of the solidarity tends to be religious. This society is rigid and intense and he attempts to measure this using punishment – punishment is very severe and retributive. o Organic solidarity – modern, based on division of labour, people are no longer the same and thus depend on eachother. Everybody has their separate part in a complicated organic society doing slightly different things. The content of solidarity is individualism, punishment will change (restitute) and society may becomes looser. Modern society cannot be English individualism (referring to Herbert Spencer)– if modern society is just contractual that’s not going to give you society unless there is some mechanism to have the contracts enforced and honoured (behind contract must lie a consensus to have the contract honoured) o Thus in modern society there must be a collective consciousness as well and it must be very strong in order for society to operate Durkheim stands in the middle of mechanical and organic (theorist of the transition between the two societies)– what he is saying is that organic society must have as its ideology rational individualism (not English individualism) with social responsibility. Describing the transition and also prescribing where you need to go to reach the final stage where people will be happier o We are living in a world of anomie and egoism so we need to achieve an organic solidarity where there will be a sense of solidarity just as strong as before (rational individual NOT egoistic individualism) 179 – 183 because Durkheim says one of the signs of abnormality is the forced division of labour (social class – class conflict) o Durkheim wants consensus, coordination, integration – you cant have a society that is based on class conflict (different from Marx and Weber – he has a sort of admiration for conflict) Why does this transition take place? Has to do with moral density - when people are crowded together in cities new forms of organization emerge (society can be an emergent property – feeling of unity and experience of a single thing) and this explains why there is a transition between mechanical to solidarity
(rewatched) 08/13/2015 ° His Rules of Sociological Method ° 1. Treat social facts as things. He means that actually a lot of the ways we think is deeply influenced by the societies we live in (society is external to us so our minds are influenced by the environments in which we grow up) We have values and ways of looking at the world as a result of the society we live in Society is real and it gives us things – gives us a sense of time, puts in our mind the idea of causation etc. Society gives you the capacity to communicate through language Sociologists are trying to understand the stresses to which we are subject Emergent properties o High levels of interaction start to produce things o Society has emergent properties because of the way it is assembled and reassembled ° 2. Sociologists are Scientists
