Sensorimotor Stage: When does it occur? Birth to 2 years How is learning taking place? Through the 5 senses and by moving around, exploring Learning takes place accidentally and through trial-and-error at the beginning of the stage.

By the end of this stage, children can find mental solutions to problems and learning occurs through imitating, pretending and insight. What concept is learned during this stage, what does it mean and what games or toys can be used to develop this concept in very young children? Object permanency – That even though an object or person is out of sight, it still exists Games or toys to develop object permanency - Peek-a-boo, hide and seek, a jack-in-the- box, pop up toys Preoperational Stage: When does it occur? 2 to 7 seven years Describe children’s thinking in this stage: Children think about everything in terms of their own actions and from their own point of view. Their thinking is based on concrete actions and they believe what they see at the moment. They are very egocentric and their thinking is illogical. Children begin to understand abstract terms like love and beauty but concentration is limited to one thing at a time. They tend to solve problems by pretending or imitating. They may not even be aware of what is real and what is make-believe,
