Cl - turns into HCl or accepts an H. Therefore, Cl - is the conjugate base. Again, the word conjugate is put in from of base because Cl - is on the product side.

8 So: HCl + H 2 O H 3 O + + Cl - acid base conjugate acid conjugate base Or is the reaction was written this way: H 3 O + + Cl - HCl + H 2 O acid base conjugate acid conjugate base Notice the work conjugate goes in front of the word acid and base if they are on the product side. ( the right side ) Example: HNO 3 + OH - H 2 O + NO 3 - What are the acid, base, conjugate acid, and conjugate base? HNO 3 - acid OH - - base H 2 O- conjugate acid NO 3 - - conjugate base 5. Strong acids and bases The word strong acid and base means the acid or base if 100% ionized in water. Ionized means broken apart. HCl is a strong acid, so if we start with 100 HCl molecules in water the following will happen. The reaction below shows HCl ionizing. HCl + H 2 O H 3 O + + Cl - 100 100 ( 0 on this side because the reaction has not started) At the end of the reaction here is what is left: HCl + H 2 O H 3 O + + Cl - 0 0 100 100 It can be seen that all 100 of the HCl molecules ionized. That is the definition of a strong acid.

9 A weak acid or base is not 100% ionized. The strong acids and bases include: Acids: HCl, HBr, HI, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 , HClO 3 , HClO4 Strong bases are the hydroxides of Group IA and IIA(except Be and Mg) NaOH, KOH, all other group IA, Ca(OH) 2 and all IIA below Ca. 6. pH Scale The pH scale tells if a solution is acidic or basic. The scale runs from pH 1 to pH 14. pH 1 to 7 is acid. ( more H + than OH - ) pH 7 is neutral( equal H + and OH - ) pH 7-14 is basic.( more OH - and H + )

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
