Alternatives for Effectiveness of Organizational Communication ProcessesThe largest issues within the pharmacy department is the lack of response fromcorporate. They are communicating their concerns to the District Manager, who is responsible tobring these issues to the top managers. However, there is an error in this process somewhere. As a result, corporate is still passing down unreasonable goals for the Woodstock PharmacyDepartment, and many other departments to meet as corporate initiatives are established to bethe same for all stores and not tailored to the individual stores capabilities. Sometimes the goalsare simply unattainable, and other times the required method of completion is illogical (AppendixA - Q#5). Both factors are frustrating to the employees of the pharmacy, and increase theirstress levels. This process needs to be adjusted to create a more effective and cooperativecommunication chain.
13RecommendationFix the ineffective communicationReferring to our research question, since the employees are already acutely aware andhave accepted/learned to deal with their daily stressors, the biggest stress is coming from thecorporate mandates that don’t necessarily fit into their work environment the way corporatewould like. There is a need for a better communication system (both ways) between corporateand store level to be able to resolve concerns in a more timely and stress free manner. If thiscould be achieved, implementation of corporate mandates may not be regarded as aninconvenience or struggle at the store level, therefore creating a more stress free environment. There are three potential areas that could be addressed to improve the ineffectivecommunication:1.The issue lies in the upward funnel formation of communication that forms as a result ofthe mechanistic structure of the corporation. The District Manager may be overwhelmedby issues in other departments that are more time sensitive, or perceived to be moreimportant. This causes a delay in adjustments to the issues raised by the WoodstockPharmacy Department, or possibly even their feedback being overlooked. In thisscenario, perhaps implementing a narrower span of control would be beneficial.2.Another possibility in this situation is that the District Manager is performing their jobeffectively, but corporate is not responding in such a way as to eliminate or reduce theissues. In this case, they need to be approached about this issue, and be reminded ofthe necessity of attainable goals for their subordinates, using the Woodstock PharmacyDepartment as an example to them to show the negative impacts their decisions arecreating.3.Finally, there is a high probability that a part of what makes the initiatives so difficult andseemingly unthinking, is the impersonal manner of the corporate initiatives. As these
14initiatives are uniform throughout the Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation, there are somedepartments that will have no difficulty with them, while others may find them
