is all about them. Another technology that is aiding to generations becoming more and more narcissistic is cell phones. Cell phones have changed so much within the last twenty years. Originally they were invented to allow a person to be somewhere besides an office or a home in order to talk to them. Now with PDA style phones, especially the iPhone, the main use for cell phones has changed from an actual phone call to different other applications that can be put on the phone for entertainment. Even Apple’s advertisement for the iPhone says “There’s an app for that.” Cell phones are enabling teens to stay in contact with other peers at all times. As we grow we spend a lot of time with our own peers at school, but when we go home children and teens are forced to interact with either younger children or adults. This helps the process of developing healthy empathy and a feeling of membership in a larger community. But with cell phones allowing teens to stay connected with their peers and “block out” everyone, it is only hurting teens from growing up and facing reality.

Taking a look at outside the United States, the trend of narcissism is increasing rapidly in China. Generations there are becoming more and more narcissistic due to multiple reasons. Not only they are also the biggest country in the world, but they are also the biggest cell phone market. Generation after generation is being exposed to newer technology. Phones that are way more advanced than cell phones here. This opens the door for teens to stay in contact with their peers via email, text messaging, phone calls, and so much more with their cell phones. Another reason China’s generations are becoming more narcissistic is due to the “One Child Policy” that was established in 1979 and is still continued to this day. Now all the attention of a family is being put onto one kid, the narcissism has skyrocketed in the country. Researchers have even named the phenomenon “Little Emperor Syndrome” (Elgan 4).
