A5 Characteristic of OrganizationA strength of Avera Marshall is that the facility is continuously growing to provide quality healthcare to our region. Avera Marshall is a CAH, but is continuously growing with everything from the amount of technology that is available to types of specialists that patients in a rural area don’t have to drive to far to see.One weakness is that Avera Marshall is a rural community which can cause a lack in people wanting to practicing rural medicine. Recruitment can be difficult in order to maintain thelevel of care/services Avera Marshall is choosing to provide.Quality improvement efforts are a huge area focus for the leaders at Avera Marshall. All leaders are expected to play a role in quality improvement efforts in our organization. Denae says that she works with the Avera system to establish quality improvement efforts specifically for inpatient behavioral health services and for education. Locally, she is involved with the dailysafety huddle, and both the clinical and workplace readiness teams.Denae thinks that being a part of a larger health system has helped Avera Marshall continue to incorporate evidence-based practice into the care delivery systems by allowing clinicians, direct care individuals, and administration to work together to identify what are the best practices and how are they implemented in a variety of care settings. The Avera Marshall organization values clinician input on service and quality committees. Evidence-based practice that Avera Marshall isimplementing at this time is the use of Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). DBT is a comprehensive treatment that includes elements of several evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral interventions for other clinical problems. (Chapman, 2006)A6 Recommendation for Organizational ChangeIt is recommended that Avera Marshall will staff nurses with a 1:5 ratio during the day and 1:6 during the night on the medical/surgical floor. The change will prioritize patient centeredness by having safer assignments which can prevent: medical and medication errors, patient mortality, hospital readmissions and length of stays, preventable events like patient falls, pressure ulcers, and healthcare associated infections. Staffing can prevent nurse fatigue, which can promote nursing safety, nurse retention, and job satisfaction, which all contribute to patient are and satisfaction. (American Nurses Association, 2015) When the patients are happier and feelthey are getting the best care possible, this can lead to better Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Patient Surveys (HCAHPS) scores. According to the Hospital Compare Data, Avera Marshall scored 64% on the overall inpatient hospital experience.
