Lecture 5 + 6: Embodied Cognition Summary - Embodied Cognition Central Tenet: - Cognition can occur in body as well as the brain, no “brain in the vat” - Cognition is dependant on having a body and aspects of the body plays a significant causal role in cognitive processing. - The Classical View: information processing = representation manipulation = computation - Brain is like a computer - The mind manipulates syntactically structured representations (neural codes) - No thinking based on modalities (visual thinking, auditory thinking). Instead we use representations - Stuff that supports Embodied Cognition - Language must be grounded: using language activate sensori-motor processes - Simulated Doing: We can better understand people by mimicking what they are doing - Gestures can help process language - Action Perception: Body movements are a part of perception - Interaction can help facilitate cognition - Our body has evolved to help compute solutions - Language must be grounded - Classical model has language in modules, meaning was in the ‘semantics’ box - We cannot explain language without grounding it, meaning was not innate - We believed that we translated natural language into the ‘language of thought’ - In reality, concepts are understood through sensorimotor simulations (images) - Sensory Stimulation: visual imagery - Sensory Priming: we are faster to respond to naming what we see - Simulated doing - Our actions make sense to us when we perform it - When we see someone perform an action, by simulating their actions we understand - Neurons called mirror neurons fire when we do the action and when we observe the action - Allow learning by imitation - Social interaction like empathy - Autism may be caused by mirror neuron deficiencies - Example : Particular neuron in the premotor area of a monkey responded when the monkey watched the experimenter grasp a peanut and also responded when the monkey actually grasped the peanut.
