US parents: sex as gender competition Boys want sex, girls want relationship Dutch parents: sex as gender relations “You permit it when you see that they really care about each other, that it isn’t just a  passing fancy” US parents tend to DRAMATIZE teenage sexuality, Dutch parents tend to NORMALIZE  teenage sexuality Sexual Orientation There are a wide variety of sexual orientations Sexual orientation vs sexual preference Orientation is more neutral bc preference assumes choice Gender identity vs sexual orientation Very different “Heterosexual” “Homosexual” and “Bisexual” Attitudes towards homosexuality (and bisexuality) have changed dramatically GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual) Individuals more visible today than ever Gay/lesbian rights movement Homophobia has declined but is still common Is sexual orientation biological or social? Probably a little of both, but the evidence is inconclusive Baily and pillar’s (1991) twin study ½  identical twins have same sexual orientation 1/5 fraternal twins have same sexual orientation
