Each week there is also a forum for you to post any questions you have about class. You are expected to complete all readings, videos etc. and finish your discussion posts and quiz before class closes for the week. I recognized that there is no perfect arrangement for when to open and close the class. Knowing that the class schedule will be consistent throughout the semester should provide students with advance notice so that you can plan to complete course work within the weekly schedule. Expectations Online courses are entirely web-based. There are no face-to-face meetings. In on-campus three-credit courses, students and instructors meet in a classroom for 3 hours and 40 minutes per week for fifteen weeks. In addition, students read and prepare for class. Instructors take attendance and grade down students who do not attend. It is expected that students will spend seven (7) to eight (8) hours per week on this course.I will totally understand and not take it personally, if, based on these expectations, you choose to drop the class in the first couple of weeks. On the other hand, it is understood, that if you remain in class, you understand and accept these expectations.
343 Syllabus 21 Jan 20183Active participation:This is an upper-level, seminar-like course and students are expected to explore the topics we cover with your own curiosity, research and writing. In other words students are expected to be active participants and contribute to our collective learning experience. Intensive Writing:Please note that this course heavily emphasizes writing! In online learning, students demonstrate their engagement with the lecture, readings, videos etc. by writing about them and interacting with other students through writing. If you do not like writing, then I sincerely suggest you consider taking another course. Attendance Policy and Make-Ups of Missed Class Work Attendance will be taken every week as evidenced by student participation in class activity such as discussion forums. As you will see, your participation (attendance) in discussion forums has a tremendous impact on your grade for the course. There are no make-ups of missed class work without prior approval. If you need to miss a week’s class, you must get in touch with the instructor before in order to make arrangements. Grading There are many different ways to construct a grading system for a college course. My goal is to be as fair and transparent as possible and to give each and every student the opportunity to earn a grade commensurate with the work you do in class. For this reason, the course grading system is based on accumulating points. You will accumulate points based on your weekly participation in class discussion forums and your performance on weekly quizzes, the mid-term exam and the final exam. The points from the mid-term and final exams will each count for 25% of the final grade. The remaining 50% of your grade will be based on points from your participation in the weekly discussion forums and your performance on weekly quizzes.
