labelled with appropriate information i.e. practical time and day, seat number, etc. Before any application of GA treatment, seedling heights from both plant varieties were measured in centimetres. This would be calculated as the height for day 0. The plant variety labelled as the treatment were then treated with GA by spraying one pot of each variety with 100mg/litre of GA. This process was completed in the fume cupboard until droplets formed on both the shoot apex and leaves. The control group was sprayed with water until droplets were formed on the leaves and shot apex also. Plant pots of both the control and the treatment were then taken to the glasshouse where they were recollected and remeasured after fourteen days. The difference in seedling height between independent groups was compared using a t-test (see Appendix 1 for calculations). Results Growth of the pea seedlings Pisum sativum was significantly greater for the dwarf variety treated with GA as opposed to water. (t-test, t= 2.032, d.f.= 34, p< 0.05) (Figure 1 and 2) Figure 1. Discussion Increased growth for the mean seedling height of Pisum sativum occurred once GA was applied to the seedlings, however was not substantial in pea seedlings of the tall variety. The hypothesis that the addition of GA would promote substantial plant growth in pea plant Pisum sativum was supported for the growth of the dwarf variety however there was not a substantial growth difference for the tall pea plants. The results provide, to a certain extent, evidence that GA is responsible for substantial plant growth mainly within the dwarf variety. A higher increase in stem growth occurs in the presence of GA (Brian, 1959). When comparing the tall and dwarf variety of treated Pisum sativum there is a more apparent difference in growth rate in the dwarf variety. GA is a naturally occurring growth hormone that is absent or inactive in dwarfs
