He is a rising star, yet his politics is unknown, both republicans and democrats want him to run. b. Hoover becomes Secretary of Commerce under Harding and Coolidge. He takes the position from a minor in Cabinet to 2 nd in importance. He expands what the department does. His belief is that the department of commerce shouldn’t regulate business, but to help them out. He promotes business while before it was purely to oversee business. Hoover saw the department as a source of information to help business round more e ffi ciently without the businesses having to spend money and do it on their own. He feels this is necessary so that business will make better decisions in the long term due to more information. c. Division of Simplified Practices

i. Hoover creates this to help businesses and industries become more e ffi cient by standardizing their industry. Example: make all auto companies use the same size tires so tire companies only make one kind of tire. This is not setting regulations by the government, but it is voluntary. d. Division of Domestic Commerce i. Hoover creates this to provide marketing information to American businesses. They do marketing studies. The idea is if the government does this, then the material is objective and companies don’t have to marketing research. It would provide general statistics. ii. Also a division of foreign commerce to give information on foreign markets. e. Survey of Current Business i. This was a journal put out by the department of commerce with a tons of stats, studies, etc. that would help out businesses. Information about reserves of materials, minerals, and supplies. 3.
