Case Study SPED 5304.01commonly leaves an activity or game while others continue to play.The team and histeacher feels he needs to be referred for other disabilities..Behavior and Socialization:My students try’s to participate in class discussion butlacks the knowledge to actively engage.He is often times off task and is either playingwith things in his desk or humming.When he is called on to answer a question oftentimes his answers are off subject or not relevant to the content.The teacher is oftentimes stuck on how to get the point across to this student.You can tell he understandshe is not on the same level as his peers.When it is time for small group he tries to hidewhat he doesn’t know by copying off other students.When things become too much forhe is ready to leave the group and get on the computers. His teacher never calls on himto read in front of the class and she never assesses him around other students.Hisgrandmother and aunt try working with him at home but they say he shuts down andbecomes difficult to handle.Reading:His reading level is consider NR (non- reader) which is well below gradelevel.He is unable to sound out words to read and doesn’t know all of his letters andsounds.He uses me and I incorrectly and refers to himself as me.“Me go to thecomputer”?He is unable to read independently..While reading he was irritated hereally did not try to use the picture and his previous knowledge to help him get through abook.He has difficulty decoding words and sounding out words.Also during hisreading if he doesn’t know the word he just skips it or makes up a word.From therunning record I can see that he has problems with using pictures as a clue.He also6
Case Study SPED 5304.01has some problems with letter sound relationship.He has some problems with meaningand structure of text.I can also see that he does not really monitor his reading he ismore concern with finishing the book. He is also needs help with his one to onecorrespondence.To help him with these problems his teacher plans on helping him touse schema to make more connections between what he knows.Also have him use hismental imagination to create meaning and used clues for infer meaning.She also planson doing modeling for him when she is doing a read aloud.Another plan isasking himquestions to engage his critical thinking during and after readings.Finally she plans onhelping him to develop his word meanings by using the chunking method and findingwords that he already knows in big books.Following are a few examples of reading intervention log, daily guided reading log,running records, teacher articulation observation, teacher language survey spelling andreading assessments.7
