The system known as common-practice tonality had essentially developed by 1750 . Although this system still generally governs most Western music, many composers continue to push the boundaries, creating complex and innovative music . ± Rhythm is the way music moves through time . Most music contains a steady pulse called the beat ~ The tempo refers to the speed of the beat . It can remain steady, slow down ( ritardando ), or speed up ( accelerando ) . ~ Beats are grouped together into measures , which are separated by bar lines ~ Beats are generally arranged in groups of two ( duple meter ), three ( triple meter ), or four ( quadruple meter ) . ~ Music can also have multiple different meters used in succession Norsoft - Lake Crystal, AK High School Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University,Shanghai,China

Performers can use different types articulations , or ways of playing, to make notes sound short and detached ( staccato ) or smooth and connected ( legato ) . ± Although musical notation can clearly convey ideas and directions, it is impossible to know exactly how music would have been performed hundreds of years ago .
