off quiet not wanting to cause any trouble. He is respectful toward Eddie but also a little uneasy about him. Marco also clearly has a strong sense of honor and integrity. When Eddie insults him
10by and calls the immigration bureau to have him and Rodolpho taken away, Marco exacts revenge and goes after Eddie.Rodolpho:Rodolpho is the younger of the two Italian brothers. He is goofy and unassuming often joking around and trying to make people laugh. He has blonde hair and is physically less threatening than his brother or Eddie. He enjoys playing music and has a lust for adventure. He tells Catherine about all the places he has visited and talks about how he wants to go with her to see a Broadway show. He has no interest in going back to Italy and plans to stay in the United States as long as possible. He wants to become a citizen and start a life with Catherine there because he says that there is no work and no prosperity in Italy for him. In many ways he is oblivious to Eddie’s issues with him. He may not understand what true love is but he clearly cares for Catherine and lusts after her. He is also still naïve in a way with his thoughts and feelings.Alfieri:Alfieri is an Italian-American lawyer who represents Eddie Carbone. One may assume that he is an older man who is more clean-cut than the other men in the play. Alfieri serves as a makeshift narrator for the play and is also considered a norm character. Eddie confides in Alfieri multiple times about his feelings toward Catherine and his worries about Rodolpho. Alfieri gives him sage advice, telling Eddie that he must let Catherine go and move on with his life. However, Eddie is too self-destructive. Alfieri watches Eddie unravel and pities his demise, but cannot intervene or help him. Even though Alfieri is in most ways a bystander, this story affects him in aprofound way. He sees the story as the audience does and feels sympathy for every character involved.
11Basic Drive:EddieResponse:Eddie is most interested in a response from Catherine. Even though he knows his feelings are inappropriate, he wants an emotional response from her. Because of this, he tries his best to control her and keep close to him, at all costs.Recognition: Eddie is interested in being recognized as the alpha male or the ultimate bread-winner for his family, Beatrice and Catherine. He wants others to recognize him as being in charge and does not want anyone to challenge that position of power.Adventure:Eddie does not find a need for adventure. He is not driven by the idea of leaving whathe knows to seek something new and different.Security:Security is what Eddie is most concerned with. It is his biggest drive. He wants everyone in his life to stay stagnant so that he can feel secure in knowing that no one will leave and nothing will change. However, everyone else in the show threatens the safety of this basic drive. This causes Eddie’s biggest inner and outer battles throughout the show. This is the drive that most motivates this character.
