Ex: U.S. kill its own citizen. Capital punishment: putting people to death. Ex: Nuclear weapon on New Jersey. Internationally response: Russia, Chinese, Basil can’t do anything against it. Reciprocity – all states respect the authority over those other territories of those sovereign holders. Your people, your territory, your people.3.1.3How did sovereignty start up?New, 300-400 years concept. European phenomena that spread out through the restof the world. Ex: Monarchs have ultimate power to rule over their people then increasingly the place. Devine blessing from God for certain family to rule. Pass down by a religious leader pope/priest. Or holy relic/scepter/sword. Devine Right of Kings Mandate of HeavenUltimate power from God, there is no higher power to rule if you have these blessings. 3.1.4Shift 1 – Rule over peoples to rule over place. Europe 1600 – drew lines and become nation – state. Shift 2 – Shift from individual as the holders of sovereignty to the territorial state andthe people as the ultimate holders of sovereignty.
