He uses descriptive colors and adjectives to paint a vivid picture in your mind, which is found throughout the passage while describing different types of foods. Another rhetorical device that seemed to be a common occurrence was indirect description. Often in this story a few sentences or even a whole paragraph will be used to describe a simple concept. For example, he writes, “They devise means of accomplishing the required nourishments of their bodies by pills of condensed victuals and easily swallowed draughts which equal, they are told, the food value of a beefsteak or a vegetable stew.” Right when I finished reading that paragraph the first time I looked at this passage I knew instantly that he was talking about diet pills, but not once did he actually say “Diet pills”. This type of rhetorical device gets the reader engaged and active. Almost like the reader is participating while they read. Although there are more rhetorical devices that can be found in When a Man Is Small , these three are the most effective and common in Fisher’s writing. Exaggeration adds entertainment and humor to the story. Imagery brings the story to life and lets the reader see what the author is talking about, and indirect description does a good job of engaging the reader and getting them involved.
