Jennifer Lee, known as Tokimonsta, scored a Grammy nomination in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category for her album, “Luna Rouge.” Connie Lim, also known as MILCK, performed her hit song “Quiet” during the 2018 ESPY Awards. The two main artists that will be discussed will be Tokimonsta and MILCK. Tokimonsta, born as Jennifer Lee, is an EDM artist. Lee’s stage name derives from the Korean word “toki,” which means rabbit and the hyperbolic hip-hop term “monsta.” Tokimonsta was raised in Torrance, California and she is of Korean descent. Chang 3 was classically trained as a pianist, she grew up around a lot of West Coast rap and participated in many workshops for beats in college such as Leimert Park’s Project Blowed and Low End Theory, where she met Steven Ellison, also known as Flying Lotus. Lee stated how her classical background has “had a huge influence on her as a composer” because “‘I like music to be a 1story, rather than just loops.’” Moreover, Lee cites M.I.A. as one of her role models because 2“‘she can do whatever she wants,” and “‘that’s the sort of trajectory I would hope to obtain.’” 3She first gained traction when she signed on to Flying Lotus’s music label, Brainfeeder, making her the first woman to sign on to his record label. Her first albumMidnight Menuwas released in November 2010. From there, Lee began to release a plethora of albums under different labels. For example, her second album Half Shadowswas released by Ultra Records and her third album Desideriumwas released by her own record label, Young Arts Records. In late 2015, Lee was diagnosed with Moyamoya disease in both sides of her brain. Moyamoya disease is a disease where certain arteries in the brain are constricted. Lee had to undergo two brain surgeries and for a while lost her language and comprehension skills. During her recovery, Lee’s boyfriend broke up with her, in which after she began formulating a new song. Lee described both her music and speaking skills coming back to her like “a fog.” Lee 4said, “One day you spoke only from a pool of few words and then a few days later that pool gets larger and larger.” Once Lee recovered, she began working on her next album Lune Rouge, even 5though she still could not fully comprehend music yet.
