accumulated to the point of turning to the court system. If many other people would just take the action of going to counseling so many marriages could potentially be saved. In some situations, the fate of a couple’s marriage isn’t always what they may have thought it was supposed to be. Sometimes it is human nature to live in the moment of things which can cause people to react on a whim without realistically thinking first. This puts people in a place to be with someone who is not destined for them which can result in one finding out they are in unity with someone they didn’t truly know. In Marilyn Barrett’s article How a Woman Can Protect Herself and Her Children in a Divorce she addresses how many women tend feel this way about the man they married. Specifically, when a divorced couple is dealing with the arrangement of child support. Marilyn states statistics from the US Census of children growing up in a single family home just to show how low the percentages are of former husbands who make full payments to support their child (212). The authors of the High Conflict article “The welfare of the child should be the top priority and not the rights of the parent” (244). This goes to show how important it is that even though the parents of a child may be going through the process of divorce they must continue to provide for their child with financial support just as before. A child is still a child and they should feel that their parents are doing everything in their power to make the traumatic transition as easy as possible. Marilyn also talks about in what ways the woman can be more passive when it comes to the couple’s finances (213). This makes it more difficult on the woman’s part to have more a fair settlement if they aren’t aware of their assets. A case example that she used in the article was the case of Henry Kravis (215). His wife Hedi settled for $3 to $4 million based off of what the company had be valued the prior year. What she didn’t know was that her husband’s share of the company was worth way more than the $7.2 million that she based her settlement off of. Once Jordan 4

the investment was split his net worth increased by millions of dollars from recent major business deals. Hedi didn’t think that this settlement was considered “fair” after things had already be arranged. At this point there was nothing that could be done, “Hedi had ample opportunity to investigate the assets and decide for herself what they were worth.” In Margret Ryznars article All’s Fair In Love and War: But What About In Divorce? she questions whether it is really fair for the one with the higher income to a lump sum of their earnings to their ex- spouse just to be considered “fair” (115)? Well it’s like Marilyn Barrett says “Fair is in the eyes of the beholder” (215). Though I for one believe that if you are not aware of you and your

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
