PRE-LAB EXERCISE 4.6: Overview of Nervous System The vertebral column houses and protects part of the nervous system. Therefore it is prudent to understand the nervous system at this time. The nervous system coordinates all activities of the body by sensing, integrating and responding to stimuli. Structurally, the nervous system has two parts: central nervous system and peripheral nervous system . I. Central nervous system (CNS) : brain and spinal cord. II. Peripheral nervous system (PNS) : all of nervous system except brain and spinal cord. It is subdivided into sensory and motor divisions each of which is divided into visceral and somatic divisions. It consists of peripheral nerves and ganglia. A nerve is a bundle of nerve fibers (axons) surrounded by connective tissue. A ganglion is a collection of nerve cell bodies with a common function. A. Sensory division: sensory afferents bring sensory signals from receptors (e.g., temperature, pain, touch, etc.) to CNS. 1. Somatic sensory division: somatic afferents carry sensory signals from receptors in bones, joints, muscles and skin to CNS. 2. Visceral sensory division: visceral afferents carry sensory signals from receptors in thoracic and abdominal viscera to CNS. B. Motor division: motor efferent s carry CNS signals to muscles and glands to carry out the body’s responses to signals. 1. Somatic motor division: (Somatic nervous system); carries motor signals to skeletal muscles. Voluntary. 2. Visceral motor division: (Autonomic nervous system) ; carries motor signals to glands, smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. Involuntary. i. Sympathetic division: prepares body for action, inhibits digestion.
