The larger the group, the greater impact on conformity (up to 7 people) Reasons for conformity Normative influence Operates when people conform to social norms for fear or negative social consequences They are afraid of being criticized or rejected Want to be LIKED Informational influence Operated when people look to others for guidance about how to behave in ambiguous situations If you’re at a nice restaurant and you don’t know which fork to use, you may look to others for guidance Want to be RIGHT Obedience A form of compliance that occurs when people follow direct commands, usually from someone in a position of authority Milgram’s research Milgram (1963) was interested in researching how far people would go in obeying an instruction if it involves harming another person. Stanley Milgram was interested in how easily ordinary people could be influenced into committing atrocities for example, Germans in WWII. Participants were 40 males between 20 and 50. At the beginning they were introduced to another participant (who was actually a confederate of the experimenter). They then drew straws to determine their roles learner or teacher - although this was fixed and the confederate was always the learner. The "experimenter" dressed in a grey lab coat played as an actor There were two rooms, one for the learner and one for the experimenter The learner was strapped into a chair with electrodes.
