exchange or interdependence matrix contains exactly these three dimensions: Affiliation is in- duced by the correspondence of outcomes of the persons involved, i.e. what proves to be good for one person, is also liked by the other, and what is unpleasant for one, is not liked by the other as well. Dominance ensues from the asymmetry of the outcomes, i.e. being mutually de- pendent, one person can obtain concessions of the other, if his or her possible outcomes are less different than those of the other person; thereby, it will become important for the other

Pleading for a more social Social Psychology 19 that the first person makes a benevolent choice. Activation, finally, is generated by the extent of the dependency or rather the span of individual outcomes, i.e. large differences in individ- ual outcomes generate much more active efforts to secure own well-being in the interaction than smaller differences that one does not mind (see also Kelley et al., 2003, chap. 4.4) 9 . Meanings in the sense of symbolic interactionism or affect control theory exactly fit to that since they are built upon the same three dimensions of the semantic differential; the same holds for the nonverbally transmitted meanings, “gestures” in Mead’s (1934) terminology. If one adds the emotional dimensions on the one hand and the personality dimensions on the other, then a large parts of social psychological research can be linked through connecting them to these three dimensions. To make specific predictions, these affective dimensions of experience and behavior, disclosing themselves in feelings, nonverbal and verbal communication, as well as in interac- tive behavior, are of course not sufficient. To the affective evaluations cognitive , volitional , normative , and ability-related aspects have to be added, because the affective processing of social matters can only be fully used together with these other kinds of dispositions. (In a sim- ilar way beliefs, intentions, subjective norms, and abilities have been added to attitudes in the theory of planned behavior by Ajzen and Madden, 1986). Giving a concrete example: For a complex causal model predicting the effectiveness of human collaboration, I have used affec- tive, cognitive, and volitional (conative) aspects of affiliation as well as a distinction between the friendly and hostile use of power, termed promotive and restrictive control (Scholl, 1996, 1999, 2005). Using such affiliation and power related dispositions will, in my opinion, a great integrative research potential within social psychology and, connected to interdependence and affect control theory, between social psychology and the neighboring disciplines. What is cru- cial here is that individual processes, which have been the main research area of psySP to date, are not assumed as being determined by an unspecified social situation, i. e. the individ- ual under social influence; to the contrary, processes of interaction and communication based on socio-structural opportunities and restrictions determine these individual processes and can be modified by them as well.
