among other duties (What are the Roles of a Supervisor in Primary Nursing, 2017). She also acted as an interface between nurses, families, patients and doctors. She stayed very busy to say the least. The nursing supervisor has both a formal and informal influence at the hospital (What are the Roles of a Supervisor in Primary Nursing, 2017). The nursing supervisor role aligns with many of the role defined in “The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing.” The Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing states that there are nine essential roles (Denisco & Barker, 2016). These essential roles include: I. Background for practice from Science and Humanities,

Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving Health, and IX. Master’s -Level Nursing Practice (Denisco & Barker, 2016). In my opinion, the nursing supervisor’s role aligns strongly with essentials II, III, V, and VI. Essential role II is Organizational and System leadership. This role promotes high quality and safe patient care. A nurse leader must have the proper leadership skills to effectively communicate with staff, patients, and families (Denisco & Barker, 2016). They must demonstrate respectful communication and initiate conflict resolution. They must also understand how the healthcare facility is organized and financed. Katie was great in this role. She knew exactly how the facility was organized, she knew what numbers the units needed to be at in order in stay productive. I was also able to watch her effectively and professionally resolve a conflict between a nurse and family member (Denisco & Barker, 2016). Her role as a nursing supervisor directly aligned with this essential. Essential III is Quality and Improvement Safety. In this essential the nurse leader must be comfortable with the quality and safety measures. They must know what they are and what the organization is doing to improve them (Denisco & Barker, 2016). The nursing supervisor’s role aligned with this because when a safety issue needs to be addressed, the nurse who made the error or did not follow protocol needs to feel comfortable explaining the error. When a mistake was made, it had to be documented. This way it could go through the proper channels and the hospital could see what changes needed to be made to keep the error from happening again (Denisco & Barker, 2016). Essential V. is Informatics and Healthcare Technologies. In this essential, informatics and technologies are used to deliver and enhance

The nursing supervisor’s role aligned with this essential because she knew the system very well. If there was an issue with the system she knew exactly who to call to get it fixed immediately.
