SummaryI learned a lot about how a pharmacy functions’ within. However, the pharmacist was unable to show me how their Winpharm system works because they were so busy. Therefore, I took it upon myself and did some research online in order to better understand how Winpharm
PHARMACY REVIEW5works. This software system can be utilized in hospitals along side the electronic health records (EHR) or can be use alone for smaller pharmacies such as those owned by a family. Additionally, it has a tab for computerized physicians entry, which allows pharmacy personnel to see all the orders from doctors and attend to them separately from their other tabs in order to minimize errors. I think that having multiple tabs helps keep everything organized and neatly separate so that confusion and errors are minimized; this is definitely a positive. Winpharm is different from the system we use as nurses, it seems to be more complicated and less user friendly, which would make it harder for new employee to learn in a short amount of time. Technology has improved the overall workflow of pharmacies by making orders completely digitalized, printing more accessible, and allowing for automated patient phone calls or text messages. This also helps reduce the error rate when medications are being transcribed after the doctor orders them. Before technology was widely used everything was hand-written; this meant nurses and pharmacists needed to understand what the doctor wrote and sometimes that was very difficult or misunderstood. We also have policies and regulations in place in case of errors and to minimize them in order to protect patients’ safety and well-being. Furthermore, pharmacists are able to educate patients by providing them with information in their own language regarding their medications through a printed leaflet all made possible by technology.
