5. How do carnivore and primate skulls differ? Carnivores generally have longer rostrums than primates. Their sense of smell is one of their most prominent senses. Primates have proportionally larger craniums indicating large brains and a greater ability to learn. Both carnivores and primates have proportionally large, forward facing orbital fossa and good vision. Carnivores have larger upper canine teeth and a tighter jaw for meat-eating. Primates are omnivores, have less prominent canines, and a more flexible jaw. 6. Describe the characteristics of each of the animal skulls that you classified. Student answers will vary. What is the difference between a reflex behavior and instinctive behavior? Describe reflex behaviors and instinctive behaviors that humans possess. A reflex behavior is one that does not involve the brain processing information. An instinctive behavior starts with an animal recognizing a stimulus, the brain acting upon the stimulus, and the animal continuing with all parts of the behavior until they are performed. A sneeze or a blink of the eyes is a reflex behavior in humans because the body acts on its own without a message from the brain. Eating is an instinctive behavior in humans because humans recognize the stimulus of hunger and then find food to satisfy the stimulus. 2. Which mealworm behaviors were reflexes? Why? When the mealworm is touched with a feather, it wiggles. This response is a reflex because it happens automatically. 3. Which mealworm behaviors were instinctive? Why? When bran flakes are placed in the petri dish with the mealworm, it moves toward the bran flakes. This response is instinctive because it involves recognizing the stimulus and then acting upon behaviors until they are all performed. 4. How did the mealworm respond to food as a stimulus? What type of behavior is displayed in the mealworm’s response to food? Why is this behavior important? It responded to food by being attracted to it. It exhibited an instinctive behavior to be attracted to the food. This instinctive behavior is important because the mealworms need food to survive. 5. How did the mealworm respond to cold water as a stimulus? Was the response behavioral or metabolic? It responded to the cold water by becoming sluggish and not moving, since most organisms slow down when exposed to cold. It responded to having cold water dropped directly on it by twitching. It exhibited a reflex behavior to the cold water. This reflex behavior is important because it is a physical response to a direct stimulus.
