Lone great white pelican at Kolleru Lake Mingled with the thousands of winged guests is the lone great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) at Asia’s largest freshwater lake, Kolleru Lake , offering a rare visual treat to bird watchers. In the past week, the feathered guest has been found spending the days with the grey pelicans and painted storks at the Atapaka Bird Sanctuary in the Kolleru Lake in Krishna district , Andhra Pradesh , earning its prey in the water body.

Estate owners behind forest fires, say environmentalists Forest fires in the otherwise completely green landscape of the Western Ghats during the winter at Somanakadu valley of Barimale in the Charmadi range has set off alarm bells among the greens in the locality. Environmentalists allege that these are not “natural” but attempts by estate owners in the region to extend their boundaries illegally into reserve forest areas. Forest fires destroy a vast extent of forest land, including Shola forests and grassland . Many people have developed estates growing rambutan, rubber, coffee, among other produce at the foothills of the Western Ghats and have regularly been encroaching reserve forest lands.

Scientists find over 100 new species in Mekong region A Vietnamese ‘crocodile lizard’ and a Thai turtle found on sale in a local market are among more than 100 new species discovered in the ecologically diverse but threatened Mekong region in 2016 , researchers said. They include 11 amphibians, two fish, 11 reptiles, 88 plants and three mammals. The Southeast Asian countries flanking the Mekong river, which snakes down from the Tibetan plateau to the South China Sea, are among the most biodiverse in the world. Each year, scientists announce scores of new species discovered in the region, which includes Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
