2 Introduction Spartanburg High School is the home of the first orchestra program (1920) in the State of South Carolina, and School District 7 takes pride in its great tradition of offering orchestra classes as a part of the school curriculum. Participation in instrumental music programs is considered a privilege for the students involved, and certain standards are expected of each student enrolled in an orchestra class: Responsibility Dependability Musical Excellence Dedication It is the goal of the directors to produce outstanding orchestras as well as outstanding individual student musicians. Students learn and develop better self-discipline, responsibility, knowledge, and take more pride in superior orchestras rather than in poor ones. Producing an outstanding orchestra requires that each student accepts certain individual responsibilities. The following pages will outline the basic requirements for the Spartanburg High School Orchestra Program. Please SIGN and RETURN the form in the back of this handbook to the school orchestra director with all requested information completed within the first two weeks of the school year. This will indicate your notification and acceptance of the policies of the orchestra program. You may wish to print this handbook and keep it in your orchestra binder so that you may refer to it as often as necessary. It is the belief of the orchestra teachers that pursuing excellence in music – even chasing “perfection” as a musician – can build the mental, social, and life skills that will help anyone be successful in the workplace after school, whether you work in music or any other field. Music education builds better people, better thinkers, better problem solvers, and better musicians! Purpose The SHS Orchestra classes meet daily during the school day. The individual development of skills, concepts, and attitudes are done in class. However, these must often be demonstrated outside of class in many and varied forms of rehearsals and performances as a group. After- school rehearsals will only be scheduled as necessary, and most performances are outside of the school day. An orchestra only performs at its best with all members prepared and present. The orchestra classes at SHS are both a preparatory program and a finishing school, in addition to being an active set of performing ensembles. That is, many of our students go on to perform in college orchestras on music scholarships, while others choose less-musical futures after high school. In either case; the specific skills, techniques, and discipline of superior musicianship are of great value to any student as they prepare for life after they graduate from high school. For example, over 60% of the doctors surveyed in the United States played an instrument in high school. That is where they learned the attention-to-detail and mental acuity with which they
