The first fundamental objective would be national security, the direct protection of the United States and its citizens from external threats. The second fundamental objective when concerning international relations is fostering a peaceful international environment. Last on the list is the protection of U.S. economic interests. 11. The secretary of defense, for example, would probably be a poor choice to help decide important issues of agricultural policy. Third, the president makes his choosing of cabinet members based on how they can benefit him in the fields of maintaining a good reputation, as well as having a good race, ethnicity, geographic and gender background etc., as opposed to finding somebody who is already close to him. Lastly, modern presidents do not rely on the cabinet to make policy because they have such large White House staffs, which offer most of the advisory support they need. 12. List and discuss the various executive branch resources available to the president in carrying out his official duties. There are various resources at the Presidents expenditure. The first would be his Executive Office of the President This consists of the president's executive aides and their staffs. The Vice President, would be one of the most important resources, as he is next in line, should something happen to the president immediately. In fact, the most important duty of the vice president is to take over the presidency in the event of presidential death, disability, impeachment, or resignation. Apart from this, you have the President’s cabinet, which consists of a group of advisers. They are also the heads of the executive departments and other key officials.
