When Jim enters their home, his expression is described as different from anger or surprise or disapproval. He simply stares at Della in silence, with a strange look on his face. This adds suspense to the story. Della explains to Jim that she cut and sold her hair because she couldn't have lived through Christmas without giving Jim a gift. She loves and cares about her husband, and she feels that he deserves a great present. Jim seems to be in shock, struggling to comprehend that Della's hair is gone. Della is afraid that Jim doesn't find her pretty without her long hair. Jim tells her that this isn't the case. He then gives her a package and tells her it's her Christmas present. Della opens the gift, and a plot twist is revealed. Inside, she finds a beautiful set of hair combs that she had wanted for a long time. This explains Jim's odd behavior when he saw Della's hair. It's ironic that Jim bought Della something for the hair she sold mere hours before. Della assures him, however, that her hair will grow quickly. Suddenly, Della remembers the watch chain, and excitedly shows it to Jim. She asks for his watch so she can see how it looks with the lovely new chain rather than the leather strap he had been using. Strangely, rather than handing her the watch, Jim fell onto the couch and sat there smiling. He then suggests they put their presents away for a bit as they're too nice to use at that moment.
