While, grandmother was lost in thought pitty-sing had acted, jumping on Bailey’s shoulder, this startled Bailey and he lost control of the car, thus resulting in an accident. (O’Connor, 344) The car finally landed in a deep ditch with woods behind it. It was not long after the accident when three young men arrived on the scene of the wreck. After, some time passes with brief discussion amongst the family and the men that stopped, grandmother blurts out the she recognizes one of the men as the violent criminal that is aloose, the misfit. (O’Connor, 345)
Churchville 3 During grandmother’s interaction with the misfit, she tries different approaches to save herself from being harmed by reaching out to his human side. She soon realizes she made a big mistake letting the misfit know she recognized him, even though he seemed pleased to be recognized. Grandmother says, “You wouldn’t shoot a lady, would you?” as she wipes her eyes with her clean handkerchief. She continues a dialogue with misfit, as her son, grandson, daughter in law, granddaughter and the infant are all eventually taken into the dark woods by Hiram and Bobby Lee the misfits two associates. (O’Connor, 346) Grandmother tries to engage the misfit by telling him how she knows he comes from good people, and that he can not be common or simple stock. They continue to talk about the misfit’s upbringing and his parents, what type of family he came from, good people, insinuating a certain social class. While grandmother is trying to get the misfit to view her as a person with common ground, she hears gun shots fired in the woods. Someone is dead. Grandmother keeps
