Dream paralysis Muscles are made paralyzed during sleep Brain doesn’t completely understand it Feeling weighted Sleep disorders Insomnia Have trouble getting out of alpha patterns/waves Can lead to addiction/sleep medication Parasomnia Sleep walking, sleep sex Sleep deprivation After 10-12 days, will die without sleep REM deprivation Get aggressive Thus sleep is critical in these ways Some people think stage 4 is physical repair of our body Also affects our ability to think, concentrate, etc (esp for calculus exams, chess) If awoken, will go back into stage 4 Dreaming is important for skills Physical and repetitive Good for procedural memory

Hippocampus Especially active for memory during sleep Freudian vs. cognitive Manifest context Sexual penetration Latent context Cognitive: random pieces of information from throughout the day pieced together, and  brain does what it must in the dream to put it together   often dreams are very unlikely  events.
