Assignments My expectations: As this course focuses on skills for developing real world work, your final work should look like it’s ready to be seen in the non-academic world. More specifically, this means error free and professional quality work. All assignments turned- in should be in a 12-point serif typeface like Georgia, Garamond, or possibly the ubiquitous Times New Roman (this syllabus uses a sans serif typeface). Please do not use Comic Sans for written documents. Effective use of logic, structure, organization, visuals and language are expected. The majority of your assignments, particularly the Service Learning outcomes, will be done on the Mac utilizing appropriate professional level software. Besides the machines in the classroom, there is a Library Mac lab. Exploratory Writing (chapter summaries) - CPAs For each chapter of reading, you will be expected to write a short, one page exploratory paper either based directly on your reactions to the content (examples it brings to mind, reactions to new or old ideas, shared experiences) or to a related question posted by me. The goal of this exercise is to help you gain deeper knowledge of the text as well as generate in-class discussion around the issues and elements of technical communication, as well as writing practice. CPA – Class Preparation Assignment Assignment #1: You, Inc. This assignment will take up the first two weeks of class. It has multiple components including an oral presentation. The focus and outcome is to give you the documents and experience you will need in your future job search. You will need to present yourself to the class and the instructor in such a way that we’d want to hire you for a job. These presentations will help to form the teams for our Service Learning Project. 1. Prepare a 5 - 7 minute oral presentation, with appropriate visuals, about yourself, your skills and why you’d make a good team member for the SLP project (Assignment # 3). 2. Develop an appropriate resume for your expected career field. 3. Write a cover letter summarizing your skills and experience to your instructor. 4. Identify potential job opportunities in your field Assignment #2: Dream Job Essay Begun as an in-class writing assignment, you will (having completed You, Inc., you have a good idea of career opportunities) write a 1 – 2 page essay on your dream (ideal) job. Why does this job appeal to you? What would you expect to do in this job? What are the benefits (positive aspects) and the negatives?

Assignment #3: Service Learning Project (SLP) In teams of approximately four members, you will work with a local non-profit organization or group on a Service Learning Project. This project is designed for practical application of the skills presented in this course and enable you the invaluable experience of working with real clients on real world needs. You are expected to produce a short, professional project that involves a good deal of writing as well as design.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
