One unifying experience for the colonists was that because of their increase in supply of tobacco and sugar, they were now able to reach a broader market. Almost everyone was able to buy what they wanted along with what was needed to survive. Religion was another unifying experience. They now had religious freedom and were not condemned to one. Chapter 6 -The British Empire and the Colonial Crises, 1754-1775 (select two) - Why did the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act draw fierce opposition from colonists? George III, the king of England, needed to find a way to cover the costs of the war and felt that the colonists should be the ones to pay. The Sugar Act “lowered the duty on French Molasses to three pence, …and at the same time raised penalties for smuggling” (Roark 150). However, even with the changes made it still did not make a difference in bringing the war debt down. He then made the Stamp Act during his second year as King. This act put a tax on all paper used for official documents. Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Ebenezer Mackintosh came up with a plan to show just how much they disagreed with the new taxes.
