4. Why do you think landmarks are built? 5. How do landmarks help us understand the story of the area that they are in? Part 2: Reflection Active learning is encouraged by increasing student participation. Participation can be increased by asking questions. Hearing the thoughts and views of other students allows for students to expand their own learning. By asking different types of questions, teachers are able to allow for all students to answer questions. For instance, by asking questions that are closed-ended, students with limited to no knowledge of the topic at hand can participate in discussion with the class. Closed-ended questions are questions that can be answered with a yes or no answer or have one correct answer. Students who have more knowledge on the topic that is being presented can be asked questions that are open-ended. Open-ended questions are questions that encourage a full answer that uses the
QUESTIONING 3 respondent’s own knowledge and feelings on the subject. The questions may not have just one correct answer (if it has any correct answer at all). Open-ended questions encourage discussion between students, peers, and teachers. By asking questions, students are able to take their background (prior) knowledge of the topic, information that they have obtained from listening to other students and from the lesson itself and use higher-level thinking to come up with answers to the questions. In my future classroom, I plan to use a mixture of questioning strategies. This will allow for all students to answer questions at the beginning of the lesson. As the class learns the lesson, by asking questions through the lesson I will be able to determine if the students are gaining knowledge and understanding the lesson. This will allow for me to assess learning and change the lesson if need be to help all students learn.
