“Theories are foundational, describing, predicting, and explaining phenomena; theories
should include the metaparadigm, and help distinguish the basis of practice which is explicit to
nursing” (Karnick, 2013, p. 29). Karnick (2013) also stated that the phenomenon is explained in
a coherent way to improve nursing research and practice. Iskandarani, Al Hammadi,& Al Gizani
(2012) cited that theories in nursing provide the groundwork for nursing knowledge needed and
the scientific backgrounds for different nursing roles. They also mentioned that a strong
theoretical background can provide the support needed to enhance nursing care delivery and
critical thinking along with better decision making (Iskandarani, Al Hammadi, & Al Gizani, 2012).
Cruz (n.d.) stated that theories provide rational to collect related data which is vital to decision
making for nurses. Furthermore, nursing theories assist nurses to provide holistic care and
better reach their professional goals (Iskandarani, Al Hammadi, & Al Gizani , 2012). Iskandarani,
Al Hammadi, & Al Gizani (2012) said “nursing theories enhance students’ understanding of
principles, values, and the meaning of nursing practice” (p. 116). So for Mary, taking a nursing
theory class again as a refresher will help her to provide the best care possible with the latest
information. The other reason that Mary should take this course is that theories can help her
with a new concept of caring. Clark (2013) stated nursing profession is struggling to move to
next level of care, which emphasizes humanism, holistic care, and redefining the old concepts of
